TESTING FOR LEGG-CALVE-PERTHES DISEASE
Am Intl Natl CH Ultra Quest Casper the Ghost x Blossom Valley Brandywine)
4 girls and 1 boy born on 4-26-2003

Casper severely injured his hip in a terrible fall at the Orange Empire Kennel Club dog show in late January 2002.  He was 9 months old.  He later injured it again in March, so I had an x-ray taken.  Dr. David Judy opined that the shadow at the edge of his femoral head was Legg-Calve-Perthes disease ("L-C-P").  Others believed it was from his slip-and-fall injury.  After treating Casper with Glucosamine for one month, I took him for a second opinion to Dr. Cherry Bednarck of Grossmont Animal Hospital.  She looked at the x-ray and opined that the shadow could be either from L-C-P or the slip-and-fall injury.  She recommended a biopsy of the femoral head to determine which caused the shaow.  She cut out the bone that day and sent it to a lab in Arizona for cellular evaluation.  They reported that the shadow could be caused by either the L-C-P or the injury.  I was in the same place as before.

After consulting with veterinarians and breeders, I decided to do a test inbreeding of Casper to a daughter, which would theoretically produce one or more puppies with L-C-P, if he had it.  That is because breeding an affected dog (with two affected genes) to a carrier (a daughter would have one affected gene from the father) would produce 50% affected pups, if the disease is straight autosomal recessive.  So, in February 2003, I bred Casper to Brandy.  On April 26, 2003, Brandy had 5 beautiful pups:  4 girls and 1 boy.  In late April 2004, I had their hips x-rayed and sent them to OFA for hip and L-C-P evaluation.  They all passed their preliminary hip evaluations and their Legg-Calve-Perthes evaluations.  I can now rest assured that Casper NEVER had Legg-Calve-Perthes.   His hip injury was the result of the slip and fall he suffered in January 2002.  Their OFA results are shown below, along with pictures of the pups:
